May 1 — 13: Bookstore Crawl
"There's a Bookstore near every home."
Signs, displays of authors participating, map/passport stamped at each store, special offers. If participants visit half of the stores, a small prize is awarded; if all stores are visited, those passports are put into a pot for a Grand Prize Drawing on Sat, May 13 at the Street Festival.

Wed., 10 am-4pm
VISIONS 2006 VENDOR FAIR: at Washtenaw Community College, Morris Lawrence Bldg., 4800 E. Huron Dr., Ann Arbor. Michigan Commission for the Blind (MCB) and the Washtenaw County Library for the Blind and Physically Disabled are co-sponsoring VISIONS 2006, a vendor fair of assistive technology for people who are blind or visually impaired.

Wed., May 3 — 7 pm:
Jennifer Weiner, Borders Downtown. Come meet Chick Lit star Weiner as she discusses her new novel, Goodnight, Nobody, the bestselling author's attempt at writing a mystery, with a healthy dose of the author's chick lit sensibilities thrown in for good measure

Friday, May 5 — 7:00 pm
Literacy Forum Night at Barnes & Noble
Come hear local literacy advocates speak and help to support the "3rd Annual Ann Arbor Book Festival". Barnes & Noble Bookstore, 3245 Washtenaw Ave. in the Whole Foods Shopping Mall, (734) 973-0846. Light refreshments and giveaways. Use attached voucher to support the Ann Arbor Book Festival.

Saturday, May 6 — 5 pm.
Dr. Shirin Ebadi, Michigan Theater. The 2003 Nobel Peace prizewinner appears to discuss her riveting memoir, Iran Awakening. Dr. Ebadi is one of the great women of our times and advocate for the oppressed whose spirit has remained strong in the face of political persecution. She will be signing books at the downtown Borders following this event.


Monday, May 8 — 7:00 pm
Mike Lupica, Nicola's Books
NY Daily News Sports Columnist and ESPN commentator Mike Lupica will be appearing at Nicola's Books at 7 p.m. He will be reading from his new book, Heat, a Young Adult novel about baseball and a coming-of-age story worth cheering for. Nicola's is located in the Westgate Shopping Center at 2513 Jackson Rd., (734) 662-0600.

Monday, May 8 — 7:00 pm
Author Elaine Viets, Murder Unleashed
Appearing at Aunt Agatha's Books, Signing & discussion. This is also a fundraiser for PAWS - Elaine will donate $1 to PAWS for every book sold. 213 South 4th Ave. 769-1114.

Meet the Author

Wed., May 10 — 4:30-8. pm
Literacy Symposium
Presenters: Cygnus Storytellers to address the storytelling process as it applies to teaching narratives to students k-12, for parents, teachers, media specialists, and other professionals. Pre-registration required. Cost $25; staff development credit applies for AA teachers.

Cygnus Storytelling group will present workshops for school children grades 3-5 at UM Residential College Auditorium

Frances Sherwood, Borders at Arborland. Come hear Ms. Sherwood discuss her newly released book, Night of Shadows, which plunges readers into the conflicting New Worlds of the mysterious Malintzín, born as an Aztec princess and sold as a slave, and her dashing and ruthless lover-master, conquistador Hernán Cortés. Sherwood's new novel is the story of a spectacular clash of traditions, imbued with her characteristic humor and brings to life the colors, smells, and sounds of 16th-century Mexico.

Open House at UM Library Conservation and Preservation Lab.
Attendees will tour facility, viewing paperwashing, bookbinding, and other conservation procedures. Shannon Zachary, “Dr. Book” will also be on hand to advise attendees with items they wish to conserve

Friday May 12, 2006: 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm FREE
Special Author Appearance: Children's Author Sue Stauffacher
Malletts Creek Branch Program Room A-B. For adults and youth grades 2 & up
This acclaimed author of 'Donuthead' and 'Harry Sue' will read from her work and discuss the craft of writing, in this event held in conjunction with the Ann Arbor Book Festival. A book signing will follow, with books available for purchase, courtesy of Nicola's Books.

Friday, May 12 — 7-8:30 p.m. FREE
Opening Reception
Participating authors gather in the Multi-Purpose Room at the Main AA Library
Members of the general public can meet them. 2006 Michigan Notable Books will be featured and light refreshments will be served.

Saturday, May 13 — 10-6 p.m.
Street Festival Kickoff at 9:45 a.m.
Ann Arbor Mayor John Hieftje and proclamation of “MI Reads” Day. Panels/readings/signings, children’s activities, exhibits, Celebrity Spelling Bee, and much more.

10:00 a.m. — "Books Change Lives" panel
